Yido Pottery makes tableware in Yeoju, the ceramics town southeast of Seoul. It sells in named lines (Sun, Yul, Yunseul, Yuun, Cheongyeon, Onyu, Soho, Yunbit) that run from a single bowl or plate up to full settings for two to six, and alongside the dinnerware it makes centerpieces and gift objects, works with outside artists, and takes on custom and commercial commissions.
Its own account of the work starts with nature: every design begins there and is finished in the clay. The studio says it watches the colors of the seasons before it shapes anything, and that it would rather look at a piece for a long time than make it quickly. The same argument is aimed at the person buying, that choosing slowly and keeping a thing for years beats filling a cupboard fast. Each piece passes through eight pairs of hands at the Yeoju workshop: wedging the clay, throwing, trimming, stamping the seal, the first firing, glazing, the second firing, and a final inspection.
